Immaterial Materials

The ontology, character and method of immersive media and its formal and informal potential.

Immersive media is often seen as a field without an autonomous material. As spatial projections, immersive media constructs new realities they surround the body and provides us with an experience, which to some extent replaces the well-known physical reality behind the projector room.

However, since immersive media do have such a strong effect and affect on us, they must also have an existence, an object and a material. Instead of just being a passive tool for spatial data these media must be qualified in an aesthetic way just as the materials of ceramics, textiles, metal and wood.

A central question to this project is the ontological character of immersive media. What is the relation between the designer, the observer and the synthetic space created by immersive media, and in which ways do immersive media expand or replace the physical reality?

The project will investigate the theoretical background of this question, develop methods aimed at designers and demonstrate the aesthetic potential of an ontological approach to immersive media through practical research.

This will be done in six parts; 1) Media and Spatial Projections unfolding the concept and construction of immersive media, 2) A New Ontology for Synthetic Realities investigating the ontological status of synthetic realities and how they expand and replace physical reality, 3) The Body of Experience investigating the place of the body in immersive media, 4) The Techniques and Technologies of Synthetic Realities providing a critical view on the technologies used to construct immersive media, 5) Form demonstrating the formal potential of an ontological approach to immersive media and 6) Information demonstrating the formal potential of an ontological approach to immersive media.

The project is financed by research funds by The Danish Ministry of Culture. It will be carried out at Designskolen Kolding in cooperation with Aarhus University, Center for Advanced Visualization and Interaction and The Aarhus School of Architecture.
